Coast Funds—an Indigenous-led conservation finance organization—has partnered with ANNEX CONSULTING to search for a Renewable Energy Specialist to join our team to work closely with senior management, the board of directors, and First Nation leaders to invest in clean energy infrastructure projects.

This role will actively manage the development, implementation, and ongoing administration of RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR REMOTE COMMUNITIES, a new program which aims to transition fossil fuel-dependent electrical grids to renewable energy sources in the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii regions.

About the role:

As a collaborative business partner within Coast Funds’ team and reporting to the Director, Project Investment, the Renewable Energy Specialist will administer all aspects of Coast Funds’ project investments under the Renewable Energy for Remote Communities program. This includes working in close partnership with applicants, advising on the development of capital plans, performing due diligence on proposals as well as progress and final reports, and administering funding contracts.

The Renewable Energy Specialist will also:

  • Work in tandem with the Executive Director and Director, Project Investment to proactively engage with First Nations to identify project ideas and plans that can be funded;
  • Conduct community-based research for Renewable Energy for Remote Communities to build the business case for renewed investment in First Nations’ efforts to decarbonize their energy systems;
  • Provide guidance to eligible First Nations regarding the application process and conduct and manage the due diligence process for all applications. This includes assessing all applications on their probability of success, conducting a risk assessment, advising on project implementation and capital budgeting, preparing due diligence for review with the Director, Project Investment, and creating agenda packages identifying risks and providing recommendations to the program’s Joint Review Committee and Coast Funds’ board of directors for all funding decisions; and
  • Develop and maintain collaborative and high-trust relationships with management, directors, colleagues, First Nations hereditary and elected leaders and senior staff, and Coast Funds’ funders.

About you:

  • 5+ years of experience in technical project management with renewable energy projects and demonstrated experience and practical knowledge of off-grid renewable energy systems;
  • Experience working with multiple renewable energy technologies (e.g. wind, solar, hydro, or biomass) and experience working with First Nations or other Indigenous communities;
  • Strong business communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to write clearly, concisely, and quickly;
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills; compassionate with a high level of emotional maturity; and
  • Available for intermittent travel within the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii to attend meetings or project site visits for renewable energy projects.
