Job Opportunity - Just Transition Lead - Indigenous Climate Action

Reporting to the Director of Programs and the Executive Director of ICA, the Just Transition Lead will be responsible for developing and implementing Just Transition campaigns on behalf of ICA.

The primary responsibility of the Just Transition Lead will be to build out training programs based off of our Just Transition Guide, support and implement renewable energy projects with community partners, and nurture strategic relationships to advance the values that are critical for Indigenous energy sovereignty. 

The position requires demonstrated competency in the following areas:

  • Education and training for Just Transition work i.e. solar electrician, wind technician, electrical engineer, energy justice, renewable energy, Catalyst 20/20 program etc.;
  • Community engagement and project management within Indigenous communities; 
  • Implementation of renewable energy projects is a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of renewable energy policy and the clean energy sector; and
  • Ability to speak publicly about Just Transition, renewable energy and climate justice.


The Just Transition Lead’s duties are as follows:

  • Nurturing relationships with Indigenous community members, and other Indigenous-led organizations and networks;
  • Coordinating installations of small-scale solar with frontline communities who are asserting jurisdiction in their homelands;
  • Creating a Just Transition training program that can be run online for ICA;
  • Participating in coalition calls around just transition and climate justice work;
  • Just Transition overview PowerPoint to be made for ICA staff to present;
  • Just Transition research support;
  • Development and coordination of training;
  • Building and nurturing strategic partnerships; and
  • Provide relevant content for ICA social media channels, blogs etc.


  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, Indigenous rights, climate justice and environmental justice;
  • Understanding of a human rights-based approach to climate change solutions;
  • Post secondary education, degree or diploma or other related fields;
  • Strong project planning skills, with the ability to set goals and achieve results;
  • Experience organizing meetings and/or events;
  • Strong group and workshop facilitation skills;
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to engage the public in conversations of Indigenous rights, just transition, climate change, equity, and social and climate justice;
  • Ability to take direction and work independently, work remotely with little or no supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Skilled in using Mac OS Operating Systems, Online Project management tools, MS Office and Google applications; familiarity with virtual webinar technology;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Desire to work efficiently as a team player; and
  • Member of an Indigenous community and fluency in an Indigenous language an asset.


The position operates as a full time salaried position with benefits and entails a 30-hour work week. However, some travel and evening/ weekend hours may be required depending upon future lifted COVID restrictions.  The successful candidate must be willing to be flexible and work hours required to meet ICA expectations. 

SALARY: $55,000-$65,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications
