Project Coordinator: Energy Initiatives
Gwich’in Council International (GCI) has focused on renewable energy at the Arctic Council over the past five years, in order to work collaboratively with our neighbours to find renewable energy solutions for the Arctic by sharing knowledge, developing best practices, and building resources. Our communities in both Canada and Alaska rely on diesel power generation and a switch to renewables will help communities to increase energy security, generate economic benefits, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Project Coordinator: Energy Initiatives will assess the past and current energy-related work at GCI and in Gwich’in communities, contribute to and disseminate tools and resources relating to the Arctic Energy Toolkit and Arctic Remote Energy Networks Academy (ARENA) projects, and develop the strategy for future energy-related initiatives.
Project Coordinator: Knowledge Systems
Gwich’in Council International (GCI) has a seat at the Arctic Council, where there are many projects that could contribute to, or benefit from, Gwich’in knowledge. We recognize that there are many Gwich’in entities and scholars working across the Nation on research, monitoring, and knowledge compilation. We want to better understand the past and current work, as well as current and future priorities, to align requests, facilitate opportunities, and increase awareness.
The Knowledge Systems Project Coordinator will create a foundation to build on in sharing Gwich’in expertise with the world, and seed future academic-community-individual partnerships.
Project Coordinator: Membership Engagement
Gwich’in Council International (GCI) exists to amplify the voice of the Gwich’in Nation at the international level, and we recognize that our strength comes from the hearts and people of Gwich’in communities. With upcoming opportunities, the increasing range and diversity of Arctic Council projects, and multiple governments, entities, and organizations serving the Gwich’in, we need to better understand the different parties, channels for communicating with membership, and how the membership would like to engage with GCI.
The Membership Engagement Project Coordinator will build the network of Gwich’in members and entities, update & develop communications materials, map out the channels and processes for communication, and explore what priorities and opportunities emerge. They will also make recommendations and examine best practices for ongoing engagement.
Project Coordinator: Youth Ambassador Program
Gwich’in Council International (GCI), the Arctic Council, and partners have identified the importance of better including and engaging youth in our work for multiple reasons: they are the current and future leaders; their voices are important and necessary; they bring a unique perspective; they are a talent pipeline for recruitment; and they are best situated to inform actions impacting them and their futures. There are an increasing number of initiatives seeking to understand and include youth, with different and sometimes unclear expectations.
GCI has determined that a Youth Ambassador Program should be created, in which youth will be recruited, mentored, and enabled to participate in supported and challenging ways. This position will develop the foundation for the Gwich’in Council International (GCI) Youth Ambassadors Program which will begin in the summer/fall of 2021.
