The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank that delivers the knowledge to act. Our mission is to promote human development and environmental sustainability. Our big-picture view allows us to address the root causes of some of the greatest challenges facing our planet today—ecological destruction, social exclusion, unfair laws and economic rules, a changing climate. With offices in Winnipeg, Geneva, Ottawa and Toronto, our work affects lives in nearly 100 countries. We are looking for a full-time Communications Assistant for our Ottawa office.

About the Position

The Communications Assistant will support IISD’s Energy Program (www.iisd.org/energy), including its Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI, https://www.iisd.org/gsi/). We are a team of over 20 experts based in the IISD Geneva and Ottawa offices as well as remotely in India, Indonesia and other countries.

We deliver cutting-edge research and practical policy support for energy policy reforms in developed and developing countries, including the reform of fossil fuel subsidies (worth at least USD 500 billion per year globally) and energy taxation. This work is aimed at aligning financial flows with safe climate targets and facilitating just transitions to renewable energy. We explore and support policies and investment related to both production and consumption of energy that are beneficial for society while being safe for human health, the environment and climate. In particular, since 2005, GSI has been working alongside many country partners, governments and intergovernmental organizations to raise awareness and ambition on the need to phase out harmful energy subsidies and redirect public spending toward renewable energy and social needs, including just transitions. We work closely with groups such as the Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform (http://fffsr.org/), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Energy Agency (IEA), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Bank, as well as international NGO partners.  Our approach is hands-on through country-level research and outreach as well as via international forums such as the G20, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Communications Assistant will support the work of the Communications Team of the Energy Program and Global Subsidies Initiative, working on fossil fuel subsidy reform as well as advocacy campaigns on fossil fuel subsidies and taxation, fossil fuel phase-out and just transition, both in Canada and around the world.

The successful candidate’s key areas of responsibility will include but not be limited to:
